Pahari Painting | Lahore Museum | Art History
His talk today will be on the Pahari paintings collection in the Lahore Museum and their significance in the art-historical research into the various
schools.Before 1947, the Lahore Museum collection had one of the pre-eminent collections amongst the provincial museums across India. It's subsequent division saw one third going to East Punjab and two-thirds remaining in Pakistan’s West Punjab. The paintings sent to India formed part of the core of the Chandigarh Museum. Over the years, these paintings have been the subject of research by scholars like Ajit Ghose, Samarendranath Gupta, Dr W.G. Archer, Dr M. S. Randhawa, Karl Khandalavala, and more recently by Dr B. N. Goswamy. In his talk, Mr Aijazuddin will trace the relevance of the Lahore Museum collection of Pahari paintings and discuss some the issues that bedevil modern art-historians on attributions based on geographical states, on royal patrons and on families of migrant artists.
