Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do I report website abuse, misuse, or copyright infringment?
On the content page you will see an icon and link to flag a page. If there is a user that is repeatidly abusing the websites Terms of Use, there is an icon and link on their profile page where you can flag that user. We track all of the people who you flag, so don't abuse this feature.

2. Who can add content?
Right now you can add content to certain articles, and you can add new articles for content that we don't have. Most of the current articles we have are locked. On the article page, look for a lock icon on the right side. If that icon is there, the article is locked. Some content is marked as private and can only be edited by the person who started the article, or someone they granted access to.

3. How do I add content?
If you are logged in, in the top right corner you will see a link that says 'add content'. Go to that page. You will see a map, and a box to its right. In that box there are three options. Add Place, Add Event, and Add a Person. Once you click on one of those links, you will be prompted to use the map. There is a location form under the map where you can type in city names, actual addresses, and some famous landmarks. When the map navigates to your desried location, click on the map and a new form will appear. This form will let you fill out information about the place or event. Do add people, you must first search to see if they don't already exist. If they don't then you can go ahead and create their record.

4. Why use AD/BC instead of CE/BCE?
It has everything to do with popularity and search engine results. Type in 1900 AD in Google and see the number of results that come back. Now try 1900 CE and see how many results come back. There are twice as many results for AD. That is our reason for using AD/BC.

5. Can I create a page for myself?
There is no better way to publish your personal history, than to record it for yourself.

6. What do ancestors have to do with history?
History is comprised of events, people, places, and time. Without people, what would history be? It would be geological or natural history. The real story is with the people that lived during the events of history. Their stories are recorded in their journals, sources that can't be found at a library, bookstore, or college campus. But they are passed down from family to family. We want users to upload their ancestors, and then upload those ancestor's stories.

7. How do I use the map? The map has a lot of options for exploring history. That long yellow bar above the map is a Timeline. The timeline can be clicked on, or dragged to activate it. The map refreshes content everytime it is dragged. Zoom in and out, and explore the world. The Map Options help narrow the content you are searching for. You can select the type of content, categories, relevance, tags, phrases, and time.

8. Who can publish content?
If you are part of a historical society or museum, we can help you publish your content on our website to be viewed by thousands of people, generate traffic for your site, provide you with ad revenue, and increase the interest in your area. If that sounds interesting, visit our contact to start this process.

9. Where do you get your content?
We get our content from multiple sources. We want to grow those sources, so we can add more content. We currently get our content from Wikipedia.org, Marquis who's who, world history users, and oxford press. If you have a museum in your area that you would like to publish their content, artifacts, and photos on our website, please let them know about us.

10. I have an error, where do I report it?
Use our bug section. You can report a new bug on the website. Tell us what section it is in, and what the problem is. You can also rank it from 1 star (not a huge deal) to 5 stars (a complete show stopper)
