Having recovered from his wound at Brandywine, the Marquis de Lafayette led 300 Continental Army soldiers from General Nathanael Greene"s division in a reconnaissance in force towards the British position at Gloucester, New Jersey, opposite Philadelphia. There he engaged a larger force of Hessians in Lord Cornwallis"s army and got the better of them.
