Dark History of the Kings and Queens of England (Dark Histories) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 48 ratings

Despite its reputation as the longest established in Europe, the history of the English monarchy is punctuated by scandal, murders, betrayals, plots, and treason. Since William the Conqueror seized the crown in 1066, England has seen three civil wars; six monarchs have been murdered or executed; the throne of England has been usurped four times, and won in battle three times; and personal scandals and royal family quarrels abound. A Dark History: The Kings & Queens of England provides an exciting and dramatic account of English royal history from 1066 to the present day. This engrossing book explores the scandal and intrigue behind each royal dynasty, from the ‘accidental’ murder of William II in 1100, through the excesses of Richard III, Henry VIII and ‘Bloody’ Mary, to the conspiracies surrounding the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, in 1997. Carefully researched, superbly entertaining and illustrated throughout with more than 200 colour and black-and-white photographs and artworks, this accessible and immensely enjoyable book highlights the true personalities and real lives of the individuals honoured with the crown of England—and those unfortunate enough to cross their paths.

I really liked the way they went into each subject and with a couple I wasn’t in agreement with the conclusion in every case (e.g. Richard III). It is up to the reader that given the facts and some other possibilities, to reach their own conclusion.

Wanted it for my library .

Wasn't as detailed as I had hoped. The scandals described were made in a very general tone without very much information. Some of the better known scandals weren't listed at all. The only exception was the present day scandals of Queen Elizabeth's family

I am an avid reader of British history and the kings and queens of that country. However, this was not one of the best books I have read on the subject. It tends to jump around too much, and not keep them in any sequence. To be honest, I didn't finish the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Klasse Buch sehr informativ + aufschlussreich

Ich bin Hobby Historikerin in History of Britain. I`m most glad to own this exzellent book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Réviser l'histoire de l'Angleterre

5.0 out of 5 stars The dark side of the Royals

Very interesting book on Royal family showing that most had a dark side to their make up. To keep family line going they had to kill rival claimemts or be killed.

3.0 out of 5 stars DON'T BE FOOLED BY THE TITLE IT IS NOT AS DARK
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 26, 2023
A BIT DISAPPOINTING. ITS A COLLECTIONS OF MOSTLEY ALREADY KNOWN FACTS BUT WITH LOADS OF ILLUSTRATIONS WHICH COUNTERACT THE LACK OF REAL DEPTH IN THE WRITING. ONE FACT REALLY PUT ME OFF WHEN THE AUTHOR DESCRIBES ANNE OF CLEVES , AS SKINNY, LOUD AND UGLY WHICH IS NOT WHAT MOST HISTORIANS HAVE TO SAY. ENTERTAINING ITS OWN WAY.
