What if humanity could start all over again? In a future not so far away, a diverse group of carefully selected people are sent to Gaya, a planet very much like Earth. They want to build a better world: free of war, pollution, racism, and greed. The settlers find a paradise of undisturbed nature – but they soon meet unknown dangers, poisonous plants, and aggressive animals. And above all, they have to deal with each other: a bunch of people with different ideas and desires, memories and individual quirks. And not everyone is willing to follow the rules.

Top review from the United States

Reviewed in the United States on March 18, 2020
This SF colonisation adventure, deliberately steers clear of the usual tropes and instead makes us think about how we would start again on a new planet without using and abusing the life already present. Picking fruit seems like a decent start but the fruit is tainted with an unknown chemical; there are debates about how the settlers can live with or without crashing the local ecology. Can their plants live on the surface, and are their newfound pets and predators going to cause problems?

I like that the colonisers are handpicked by a sneaky scientist who - in a series of reveals - got them off the ground. The tensions are understated but dilemmas feel real. Children are the cause of some dramas and too often, kids are left out of SF stories.

If you want a space war book, this isn't for you, but if you enjoy some philosophy and ecology, dive in and have fun. I could see a series developing as the settlers expand their territory and knowledge, and the next books would move more quickly now the scene is set.

The author made an e-ARC available to me. I chose to read and to review in my own time. This is an unbiased review.
