In the seventh in Gary Corby's Athenian Mystery series, Nico and Diotima must solve a murder case while also preparing to have a baby. Set on the sacred island of Delos in 5th century BC, Death on Delos is full of humor and historical intrigue.

Greece, 454 BC: The sacred isle of Delos, the birthplace of the divine twins Apollo and Artemis, has been a most holy pilgrimage site for centuries. Delos is also home to the military fund kept by the Delian League, the alliance of city-states that defended Greece against the Persians, and that vast treasury is protected only by the priests and priestesses of the tiny isle and a scant armed guard.

Then one day the charismatic Athenian statesman Pericles arrives at the head of a small army to forcibly take the treasury back to the safety of Athens. With him are Nico, the only private agent in ancient Athens, and his heavily pregnant wife and partner in sleuthing, the priestess Diotima. She has been selected to give this year’s annual offering to holy Artemis.

In the face of righteous resistance from the priests, Pericles assigns Nico to bribe their leader. But before he can get very far with this dubiously unholy task, Nico ends up with a murder on his hands.

It is a crime against the gods to die or be born on the sacred island. Thanks to the violence over the treasury, the first blasphemy has already been committed. Can Nico solve the murder and get Diotima off the island before they accidentally commit the second?

Review

Praise for Death on Delos

"Excellent. Once again, Corby combines an ingenious whodunit with convincing period detail. This humorous and educational ancient historical series gets better and better with each entry."
Publishers Weekly, Starred Review

"Refreshingly original...There’s so much to admire here: Corby seamlessly works in Greek myths and history; the details of everyday life, like rituals, coins, and food, are part of the fabric of the mystery; and Nicolaos and Diotima’s witty, sexy relationship seems like a BCE version of Nick and Nora Charles. Another outstanding entry in a consistently excellent series."
Booklist, Starred Review

"In his brisk seventh mystery set in the world of ancient Greece, Corby highlights the crackling chemistry between the two leads and provides another helpful, amusing list of characters that includes a description of and a quotation from each of them."
—Kirkus Reviews

"The amalgamation of energetic action, amusing characters, and fascinating story lines based on accessible and absorbing historical facts will delight new and old fans alike. Readers who enjoy the ancient world detective series by Lindsey Davis or Steven Saylor may also appreciate this title."
—Library Journal

"All sorts of skullduggery take place . . . Gary Corby has the knack of combining history, humor, and untimely death in a way that's so entertaining readers may never realize that they're learning something.
Death on Delos tells a fast-moving story involving the Nick and Nora Charles of ancient Athens."
—Kittling Books

"Packed with interesting historical tidbits. . . highly recommended."
—Gumshoe Review

I've hugely enjoyed all of the books in this series, and I am hoping the author has more planned. If you liked these, you might enjoy similar books, but based in ancient Rome, by John Maddox Roberts: the SPQR series.

Another excellent Athenian mystery by Gary Corbey. Diotima is very pregnant yet she is named the lead investigator in a murder of a priest. Initially she gives Nickolas a hard time even asking if he committed the murder. Eventually they move forward on a joint investigation. Her pregnancy slows down the investigation, but our intrepid heroes plod on. The history is interesting and Nico and Diotima remain engaging.
Only 4 stars because the conclusion becomes chaotic with an Agatha Christie presentation , pirates, and the birth. The identity of the killer becomes secondary to the chaos

Diotima is pregnant and shes been selected by the goddess to present Athens gift to the temple at Delos. And by pregnant I mean ready to deliver any time now, so perfect time to go to an island where birth and dying are forbidden. Oh and just to be more exciting Pericles is there to move the treasury of the Delian League to Athens as a protective measure albeit unilateral. The High Priest is not convinced, but the second ranking priest puts up a huge fuss and there is nearly a riot. Nico is sent to bribe the man, but when he goes back to pay him off the old priest is murdered. Everyone suspects Nico and Diotima is hired by the High Priest to investigate. Things get very complicated very fast. Great way to get some history and an interesting twist makes a historical mystery have an intriguing answer.

This series is always a pleasure to read! Corby writes with the details of a Greek scholar and can turn those dry, dusty facts into a very human and humorous tale. I love the explanations at the end. I hope to read about Nico and Diotima for years to come.

Sent to an island of priests and priestesses. It is illegal to give birth or die on this sacred isle. Of course our favorite investigators manage to be tangled in the breaking of both prohibitions. Gary Corby is a terrific writer. He weaves historical fact with with a believable and intriguing story.

Gary Corby’s Athenian Mysteries series has yet to provide a disappointment. In this seventh book "Death on Delos," Corby’s storyline works out well.

Nico is the only private agent in ancient Athens, regularly employed by the city’s state’s elders, who has a sleuthing track record of Olympic-styled victories. With his wife the priestess Diotima (now heavily pregnant but fully functioning, nonetheless), they are in Delos, sacred island and birthplace of the divine twins Apollo and Artemis, one of the holiest places in that pantheon. It’s 454 BC and Diotima has been selected to give this year's annual offering to holy Artemis.

Delos is also home to the military fund kept by the Delian League. That incredibly vast treasury is protected only by the priests and priestess and a small contingent of armed guards (after all, who would dare steal from the gods—surely every Greek and Trojan learned that lesson years ago!).

But things now become more complicated. The legendary popular statesman Pericles arrives with a small army, prepared to take (forcibly) the treasury back to Athens “for safe keeping.” Of course, there is much opposition from the priests. (The Golden Age of Greece has more than one meaning!) Diplomat that he is, Pericles hires Nico to bribe the high priest but before that can be managed, Nico finds (yes, once again) a murder on his hands! (Poor Pericles perhaps had no idea he was creating political pathways for politicians for ages to come!)

Every Greek knows that it is a crime against the gods to die or to be born on the sacred island. Now, thanks to the violence over the treasury, the first blasphemy has been committed. Nico and Diotima are worried that a second crime may now be at hand. Will they get off in time?

While Corby is certainly no Plato or Herodotus or even Sophocles, he still is able to provide a continuation of this very readable series. And it can be read in modern English with no worries about bewaring of Greeks bearing gifts.

This might be Gary Corby's best yet! A gripping tale of murder, thievery and mayhem intertwined with enough history to keep it real. I do miss Socrates though.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Enjoyable Historical Greek Mystery!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 4, 2018
This entertaining book by the Australian author Gary Corby is the 7th volume in the exciting Athenian mystery series.
The historical details concerning this Classical Greek period are very well researched and explained by the author in his Author's Note and Glossary, which you can find at the end of the book.
At the beginning of the book you'll find an important list of Actors featuring in this tale, and not to forget a nice map of the Sacred Isle of Delos.
Storytelling is of a very good quality and brought to us with a lot of humour by the author, the storyline is well worked out, and all the characters come splendidly to life within this exciting murder story.
This story is set in the year 454 BC, and it will take our main characters, the fictional Nicolaos, and his wife, the real historical Priestess Diotima, to the Sacred Isle of Delos.
Delos is the home to the military fund of the Delian League, an alliance of city-states that defended and still defends Greece from the Persians, and that treasury is wanted by the real historical charismatic Athenian statesman Pericles, and its he who assigns Nico to try to bribe the leader of the resistance, Geros, so that Pericles finally can take that money back to Athens and safety.
All at once there's the murder of this same man Geros, and Nico must try hard, under the lead of his heavy pregnant wife Diotima, who's appointed as lead investigator by Anaxinos, the head-priest of Delos, to solve this murder, and what will follow is a mystery with quite a few twists and turns, and certainly with unexpected developments, that will finally end with a very surprising verdict for Diotima and Nico to bring to all at the Island of Delos.
Highly recommended, for this is an Ancient Greek mystery series at its best, and that's why I call this book: "A Very Enjoyable Historical Greek Mystery"!

Another good story from Gary Corby. It got a bit hectic at the end, but still managed to wrap up satisfactorily.
It looks like Corby was thinking about an 8th novel. I wonder what happened, as this was the last in the series.
