Enrico Caruso sang in its grand ballroom, and Arturo Toscanini lifted his baton to its soaring ceiling. Constructed in 1919, OHEKA Castle, Long Island's largest Gold Coast mansion, was once described by the New York Times as the "finest country house in America." Appearing as the mysterious mountaintop castle in the opening scenes of the film classic Citizen Kane, its majestic edifice and meticulous grounds continue to dazzle the screens of major Hollywood movies and television shows. It was a playground for the rich and famous of the Gilded Era, when heads of state, royalty, stage and screen stars, great comedians, and bohemians alike cavorted about its great halls. In subsequent years, it became home to an eclectic array of occupants, including New York City sanitation workers, World War II radio trainees, military school cadets, and eventually vandals and squatters. After its abandonment and descent into unrecognizable ruin, a Long
Island developer with an appreciation for history reversed the adverse effects of time and neglect, transforming OHEKA into the largest restored home in America.

As an Eastern Military Academy cadet before 1950, a member of the Friends of Oheka, in the 1990's and the joyous recipient of a guided tour of the pre-renovation building by Gary Melius ,himself ,the present owner-developer of the site, and an acquaintance of both Joan and Ellen, I was most pleased by this little book. Having been a regular visitor to the house over the years since it was acquired by Gary , I really miss it's grandeur since retiring to Florida. Definitely a 6STAR item, in addition to my own copy I have purchased others as gift to demonstrate what the Golden Age of Long island's Gold Coast was, and in some ways, still is all about.

I had my wedding here last year and I knew a lot about the castle from the information the staff provided, but this book really gets into detail with everything that happened in between Otto Herman Kahn's ownership and the present day. There are detailed photos from its time under the ownership of the NYC sanitation department, including how they destroyed the fountains, its use during WWII, its use as a military academy, its decay due to abandonment and finally its revitalization as one of the most beautiful homes in America.

For anyone that enjoys the great house period in America, you will love this book. It is a mini history of this great house on Long Island . There are great archival pictures and editorial on the many phases of this house is enlightening. The Images of America series is a concise history book on many different topics and is enlightening. If you like Oheka Castle you may consider Whitemarsh Hall also from the Images of America series.

Not one color picture! all black and white. For the price it really would have been nice to see Okeka in color.
Glad I didnt buy the hard cover. Frank Scala wasn't a big part of EMA and most cadets were there the entire four years or like me 7. Great book great researching great to still have Oheka. Mrs Kahn was going to demolish it that just shows how sad entitlement is. Thanks to Gary M and all the folks who saved this huge Diamond.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great book with minor shortcomings
Reviewed in Germany on April 6, 2020
Overall, the book does a good job in telling OHEKA Castle’s story. It has plenty of images that bring back the past periods and introduce the people that shaped the building.
I do have some criticism though: At one point, the storyline in the late 80s to 90s gets a bit confusing when the author jumps between years; the period of chapter two contradicts a later mentioning in the wrap up; at least one picture has a wrong title; and the paper is a little too transparent/should be thicker (got the hardcover version).
It would be great if more pictures about the interior and it’s floor plans, etc. would be included. Nonetheless, I think that, overall, the book makes a great job in giving your the royal tour of OHEKA.

A fascinating window into life on Long Island during the 1920s and onwards. Well researched with many interesting facts.
