Herrick is represented in most poetry anthologies by the same one or two poems. “Hesperides” contains over a thousand of them. This is a nicely presented reprint of an early twentieth century edition with a preface by Swinburne in which he states that Herrick was the greatest song-writer in English Literature. Well, if so, then Herrick is the Chuck Berry of EL, rewriting the same song (mostly on the same subject - guess what) over and over again, an essential inclusion in any historical anthology but rather tedious as a box set.
