The Romulan Star Empire engages in all out war against Earth, determined once and for all to stop the human menace from spreading across the galaxy.

Earth stands alone.

The Coalition of Planets has shattered, with Vulcan, Andor, and Tellar abrogating the treaty. Their pledge to come to the mutual defense of any power that is attacked has been shunted aside. Horrified by how easily the Romulans can seize control of their advanced starships, turning them into weapons, Andor and Tellar have joined Vulcan on the sidelines. Humanity is now the only thing that stands between the Romulan Star Empire and total domination of the galaxy.

To drive humans from the stars, the Romulans employ ruthless and murderous tactics...and even dare to strike on the Vulcan homeworld with the hopes of demoralizing their Vulcan brethren. Heartened by their victories, the Romulans carry their all-out war assault closer to the heart of humanity—Earth.

But the tattered remains of Starfleet stand unwavering, with the resolution that never again would any enemy strike ever reach Earth. On the front lines of the Earth- Romulan War is the United Earth flagship, the
Starship Enterprise. Her captain, Jonathan Archer, has seen his vessel of exploration become a battleship. Once hailed for his work bringing the Coalition of Planets into existence, Archer is now a pariah. Undaunted, the captain keeps fighting, searching for allies and determined to do his duty: to save Earth and forge a new federation of planets.

I was one of those Star Trek fans who was greatly disappointed when Paramount/CBS decided to pull the plug on Star Trek: Enterprise after the critically acclaimed 4th season that held so much promise in showing us the mythic Romulan War and founding of the United Federation of Planets discussed in Star Trek: The Original Series. Thank The Great Bird that 'the powers that be' allowed author par excellence Michael A. Martin (with Andy Mangels) to pick up the Enterprise story through the written word. "To Brave the Storm" picks up where "Beneath the Raptor's Wing" left off and takes us through the political machinations of trying to bring the Coalition of Planets together to oppose the coming Romulan War as seen through the viewpoint of our intrepid Captain Archer, his Vulcan First Officer, T'Pol and most interestingly through the clandestine efforts of former Commander Charles "Trip" Tucker who has undergone quite an exciting period of change since his "death" at the end of Enterprise's Season 4. You get to touch base with many of the familiar characters from the Enterprise universe but Martin focuses telling this epic story mainly through the lens of this triumvirate. This allowed Martin to keep the story focused, moving the plot onward into the dark days of the Romulan War. In the best Star Trek tradition Martin explores how even when humanity is facing great stress and adversity we are still able to rise to the occasion by following the better angels of our human nature. I believe that this novel will be eminently satisfactory to those who read it wanting to experience one of the great untold stories in Star Trek (future) history. The one major caveat I found with this book was I didn't want it to end. I know that is the hallmark of a great author but I was so invested and engrossed by this wonderful story I did not want to reach the final page. I look forward to Martin's future books set in the Star Trek universe. He has obviously been blessed by The Great Bird of the Galaxy with the deep understanding of the great humanist mythology of our species future left to us by the late, great Gene Roddenberry. I gave this book 5 stars without hesitation because it is one of the finest Star Trek books I have ever read bar none.

Many readers complain loudly when authors do not follow established canon. One of the biggest complaints against Enterprise was that it changed Star Trek history. True trek fans should appreciate the extent that Michael Martin went to in order to preserve and even restore canon. Why does Archer's Enterprise look more advanced, with digital displays and controls, while Kirk's is clunky analouge? Want to understand the origin of the prefix code in Star Trek II? There are many more little areas where the author takes care to make his story, and Enterprise as a whole, line up with things seen in the TV show and movies. This reader appreciated that attention to detail.

The work however only gets four stars and not five because the story drags at places and at times far too much time elapses between chapters, and things seem to happen that the reader doesn't experience. Its true that the author had lmited paper to tell a war that lasted years, but it still detracts from the story. The romulan war arc could have been made into two or three more books, maybe six in total istead of four. There is always a feeling of condensed action in this set of novels. Additionally, I think the ending could have been more clear instead of allowing the reader to draw their own conclusion on a very important issue, although it is obvious what the writer feels happens.

On the balance however this novel concludes an enjoyable series of books which fix the worst episode in all of Star Trek history, TATV (it shall not be named) and explains things RIck Berman and Brannon Braga never felt like addressing.

In conclusion, hardcore fans of Star Trek (and science fiction in general) often complain loudly that the author crapped all over canon (J.J. Abrams I am looking at you). So when an author goes out of their way to attempt to follow and restore canon, and cleary did some research, that author should be congratulated. Thank you Mr. Martin.

Michael A. Martin’s “Star Trek: Enterprise: The Romulan War – To Brave the Storm” picks up shortly after the events of his first Romulan War novel, “Beneath the Raptor’s Wing.” With Earth and the human colonies standing alone following the Coalition of Planets’ collapse due to the Romulan ability to overwhelm Vulcan, Andorian, and Tellarite ships, Captain Jonathan Archer and the crew of the Enterprise NX-01 find themselves representing a diminished Starfleet that now seeks primarily to hold Earth as the Romulans advance. Looking for new allies, Archer and his crew begin a goodwill campaign to help demonstrate the Romulan threat while courting potential allies. Martin clips along as a steadier pace than his previous novel, covering several years in half the length as the “Beneath the Raptor’s Wing.” That book felt more like prologue for this one, the climax of the war ultimately culminating in the formation of the United Federation of Planets. This event, briefly shown on-screen during “Star Trek: Enterprise” and referenced in other “Trek” shows, gets its due in these novels that offer a glimpse of what could have been had “Enterprise” been renewed for a fifth season.

I'm guessing this was where the show was heading toward. Very sad we didn't get it. Thankfully it lives on in the books. There are two in the series. must buy

I recommend reading the first book in the Romulan War series (my mistake). This was, as you wouuld expect, an easy read. Plenty of suspense with a familiar cast of charactersm along with some new ones. Chapters jump between different POVs but it's easy enough to follow. I do recommend this for Star Trek fans.

A good book useful for when I couldn't get enough star trek. Non-canonical for the most part, but still enjoyably to read.

Incredible book, well written, great detail, insane level of detail to intergalactic politics and interagency (Starfleet-MACO) cooperation and rivalry. Well worth the buy. Loving this series so much.

2.0 out of 5 stars Un libro di storia o un romanzo?
Reviewed in Italy on February 22, 2015
