This is an exceptional book of Revolutionary War battle maps. A treasure trove of approximately 67 battle-movement and site visuals, it helps bring to life the action involved in the American Revolution’s most famous battles. Accompanying the maps are about 41 essays that give a fair overview of the maneuvers and main strategies involved. In more than a few cases, however, the essays leave it to the reader to follow on the maps all the often intricate battlefield moves George Washington and his generals took in both victory and defeat. So a degree of historical familiarity helps.

As there is at this time no “Look inside” available, here is the Table of Contents:

As the book has no footnotes, endnotes, or bibliography, readers will have to rely on American Battlefield Trust’s reputation for excellent research. Unfortunately, some may wonder about accuracy after confronting typos that escaped and evaded proofing. Hopefully, a future update will remedy this very minor problem.

Overall, ABT’s admirable effort has resulted in a eminently readable book and welcome addition to any Revolutionary War library. Fully recommended!

The American Battlefield Trust produces among the highest quality battle maps for anyone studying American military history. However, I was disappointed that this book was less than comprehensive as the western theater is largely absent. The Siege of Boonesborough, The Battle of Peckuwe, Crawford’s Defeat… these are far from inconsequential moments in early American history and deserve more attention. Other than that it’s a great book.

It is also good from the fact that it overlays the battle over todays development. This lets you see the good and the bad concerning what has been saved for posterity and what has been lost.
