We all recognize the Latin version of the cross (crux immissa) being the symbol of Jesus Christ and the Christian faith. But what I didn't realize was how much further the cross (and its many variances) go back in historical record: "...both the emblem of the Christian faith and a more ancient and universal image of the cosmos reduced to its simplest terms - two intersecting lines making four points of direction. These stood for the four cardinal points and the four rain-bearing winds (notably in pre-Columbian America where the cross was often a fertility emblem of life and elemental energy), the four phases of the moon (Babylonia), and the four great gods of the elements (Syria)." If you're into folklore, history, mythology, Biblical studies, the occult or metaphysics, PLEASE get a copy of this. One of the ABSOLUTE best reference books that I've come across yet!
For what it is, unless you've got your own private Wikipedia, I don't see how anyone could be disappointed by this book.
I refer to the book more often than I anticipated that I would. I use it for referencing symbol origins and their meanings of course, and surprisingly I find that using the book for dream interpretation works excellently.
For anyone who regards symbolism as important, I give the book my highest recommendation.
