Verner's first chapter describes the evolution of the Egyptian state and its royal tombs before the pyramids. The second describes the rituals of burial and the institution of the pyramid temple, and the third discusses pyramid construction and the evidence and hypotheses about how it worked. After that come chapters dedicated to the pyramids of the Third, Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Dynasties, the First Intermediate Period, the Middle Kingdom, and the Second Intermediate Period. After the epilogue there's an appendix on the dimensions of each pyramid and another about the most important scholars, past and present, who have studied them.
