Elisha's Bones!

Just three years after the recovery of Elisha's bones, Dr. Jack Hawthorne has given up teaching and resumed the practice of archaeology, although his frequent absences have put a strain on his relationship with Esperanza. Things heat up when Esperanza receives a call from an antiquities dealer with troubling news about Jack, and her fears are confirmed. Jack has gone to Libya in search of another biblical artifact: the Nehushtan, the serpent staff of Moses.

After Jack arrives in Libya, he soon discovers he isn't the only one searching for the Nehushtan. Later, in attempting to steal it, he finds himself in the hands of a man who just might be his match. Jack and his friends must stay one step ahead of the Libyan government, an overambitious member of the Vatican hierarchy, and an Egyptian assassin--if they stand any chance of staying alive long enough to recover the staff.

Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

Moses built and lifted up the brass serpent,
healing the afflicted Israelites of snakebites.

King Hezekiah called the serpent Nehushtan. Long thought destroyed, it's been buried for millennia, secreted under the region's shifting sands.

Now the Israeli government wants it back and they will stop at nothing to get their hands on it. Yet they're not the only ones who covet the Nehushtan.

Archaeologist Jack Hawthorne travels to Libya intent on recovering the sacred object, but one does not cross the Mossad and expect to walk away without a fight. Jack and his friends must find the priceless "snake of brass upon a pole" before those who are also hunting it find them...and silence them forever.

Hello, my name is Sandi, and I'm a Hawthorne-aholic. Oh, sorry, wrong meeting. But I am, however a new fan of Don Hoesel's Jack Hawthorne Adventure Books. So far I've read books 1-3 in this series and I couldn't put them down. My Kindle read them to me while driving down the road. I read them off my phone's app while waiting in lines, and I even fell asleep reading them at bedtime. They put me in mind of an adult version of Frank E. Peretti's Cooper Kids adventure series because of the archaeology base mixed with the biblical and adventure aspects - and in this case the conspiracy theory elements. I bought into the characters early on in book 1 and never looked back. Although centered around biblical artifacts and the main character's struggle with the faith of his parents, the books are not "Bible-thumping" Christian fiction. Those who aren't of the Christian faith should not find them offensive or "in-your-face". It was nice to have this type of adult adventure book without an abundance of profanity that sometimes laces other books of this genre. Kudos, Mr. Hoesel! I hope to read many more of your books in years to come.

The adventure continues and it was as enjoyable as the first book. This time, it was Moses' staff with a serpent that's the object of desire.

If I have any reservation about this book, it is the somewhat quick discoveries being made about signs and clues. If one's group has a legitimate archaeologist, a voracious linguist, and an antiques dealer, one has got to have a very fiction-trained mind to not question their ability to quickly spot and interpret the clues.

Not that I'm complaining... It's just an observation. At the end of the day, what really matters is how enjoyable and entertaining this book is.

A great story with more plot twists than can be imagined. Fabulous follow-up to the first book. You will not be able to put it down until you're finished.

Mr Hoesel's books seem to spend a lot of time developing a fairly intricate plot and set of activities, usually involving details in many places in the world. At this aspect, he seems to be at his best. His endings always seem abrupt and too simple - I get the impression his publisher's deadline is suddenly looming so he quickly drafts and ending and sends the book off. The serpent of Moses is written accordingly.

I have read several of Don Horse's books and each one is more exciting than the last one. Highly recommend this author

I thoroughly enjoyed the first book, Elisha's Bones, so I was excited to read the second in the series but I was disappointed. This book just didn't keep my attention and I was confused by the ending. Did the glowing and buzzing of the staff heal Templeton? The ending just left me with too many questions.

I like books that not only tell the story but also teach you about the culture. Don Hoesel is good at this and Serpent of Moses doesn't disappoint. There are times it is a little wordy but overall it's a good experience. And, the relationship between Jack and Espy is classic. I appreciate it not being all about dreamy eyes, hard bodies and wedding bells. Read it.

Great getting back into the adventures of Jack, Espy, Romero and Duckkey. Learning about countries I will probably never see other than in books, and biblical artifacts I've never heard of is adventure for me. On top of the adventure is the friendships between the characters that comes off in a way that makes them seem like friends to the reader as well. To top it all of there is the relationship of the characters with God which seems genuine and not overpowering.

I enjoyed the "Indiana Jones" appeal of the first book and was not disappointed by the second! Believable character development although sometimes the invincibility of the hero is far-fetched. Not predictable plot so keeps me intrigued. I would recommend this book to others and will order more by this author!

A great follow up to the first Jack Hawthorn book. We see the characters develop well and see more of the supporting characters from the previous book.
The hunt is on for the Staff of Moses with the brass snake wound around it, the hunt takes us from Milan,Libya, Tunisia and finally Turkey. A must read for anyone who likes history combined with relic hunting.
