Their stories are so gripping, so full of the immediacy of the moment, that it transports you back in time. Auf so ein Buch habe ich schon lange gewartet. Im Gegensatz zu anderen Büchern über das Thema Titanic wird hier ihre Geschichte weder nacherzählt noch werden irgendwelche Theorien besprochen. Es geht einzig und alleine um die Menschen die damals auf dem Schiff waren. Auf über 400 Seiten werden Briefe von Besatzungsmitgliedern und Passagieren veröffentlicht. Einige wurden schon 1912 in diversen Zeitungen veröffentlicht, andere Stammten aus Privaten Sammlungen oder sogar aus Familienbesitz und sind somit zum ersten Mal der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich. Der Autor selber hält sich zurück, somit finden sich keine Kommentare zu den geschilderten Ereignissen oder Korrekturen wenn z. B. Überlebende eine falsche Uhrzeit nennen.
Zwar sind keine Bilder im Buch zu finden, aber alleine die lebhaften Schilderungen einiger Überlebender sind ergreifend.
