My first Mundle book, and I am hooked. Australian history is one of my major interests, and there is quite a lack of information on this, so this book is great. I can't put it down, and have put aside everything else I'm reading to concentrate on this...and it's an eBook. Yes, I am old school and like to have actual paper, and not paper white. But this is definitely worth getting out of my comfort zone.

It's not for everyone. Basically, if you look at this and say "Australian history? I'd like to learn more about that", then pick it up.

Very interesting overview of WA European discovery. The navigation side was explained clearly but not too weightily for readers like myself who are not familiar with sea-faring. His portrait of William Dampier was especially good - an intriguing, clever man whose importance has been under-played in other accounts.

I learnt so much from this book. I have read most of the author's books and enjoyed every one.

For those who love nautical adventures and Australian history, Rob Mundle's books are generally terrific. His down to earth narrative style and his experience as a sailor and give his books real quality and perspective. His previous works Bligh, Cook and Flinders are some of all time my favourites in books of this kind and, while it's not quite in that league, Great South Land is still very good. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rob Mundle, a master historian

A great read (or I should say listen, as I did on Audible), Rob Mundle has a talent for narrating historical facts in a way that makes it interesting and enjoyable. I learnt a lot from this book, great insights into a fascinating period of maritime exploration and its motivations. Intriguing stories of how coincidence, greed, bravery and quite literally escapism shaped the time leading up to the discovery of Terra Australis. Our history could have been quite different with just another tack here, a wind change there....

"Dampier, the Dutch and The Great South Land" by Rob Mundle is all about Australia, the island continent that lay sleeping unclaimed for so many years and the intrepid adventurers who with much danger and loss of life discovered her.

I liked the way the author related the journeys of the brave Dutch and English captains and their crews. Having a Dutch p/ English heritage made it even more interesting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read about early maritime exploration

A very interesting and comprehensive account of the intended and unintended exploration of Australia commencing with the very early Dutch and detailing attempts to map Australia right up to before James Cook arrived. Great descriptions of the ships and individuals involved and the difficulties they endured.
