The definitive book that recounts the full history of the colorful queens of Egypt.

This fascinating saga spans 3,000 years of Egyptian queenship from Early Dynastic times until the suicide of Cleopatra in 30 BC. Starting with the unique role enjoyed by Egypt's women in the ancient world, the book goes on to present a biographical portrait of every queen, supplemented by a wealth of pictorial detail, datafiles, genealogical trees, timelines, and special features―from Childbirth to Wigs―highlighting different aspects of Egyptian culture.

The queen of Egypt was, first and foremost, a supportive wife and mother, but in times of dynastic crisis she was expected to act as her husband's deputy. The queen might be required to marshal troops, or to rule on behalf of an infant son. She might even be called upon to rule in her own right in the absence of a suitable king. The female pharaohs Hatshepsut and Tawosret, the sun queens Tiy and Nefertiti, the seductive Nefertari and Cleopatra: many of Egypt's queens have left an indelible mark on their country's history.

And what of Egypt's lesser queens, the numerous wives and daughters maintained in pampered seclusion in the harem palaces? These women are generally forgotten, their graves lost in the desert sands. But the anonymous ladies occasionally stepped from the security of the harem to influence the royal succession, and their stories too are told. 273 illustrations, 150 in color

I admit I haven't read this book cover to cover. But it's not that kind of book. You can read sections or bits on individuals. Arranged like the other "Chronicles of" books from Thames and Hudson (in chronological order), Queens of Egypt covers every known queen from the Early Dynastic Period to the last Cleopatra (but you knew that from the sub-title). However, that's not an easy task. It's "easy" to assemble information on women like Hatshepsut, Tiye, Nefertari, and Cleopatra. It's easy to find images of them. But there were hundreds of women that we could call "Queen of Egypt" (of course, that term didn't exist; they were "King's Wives"). In some cases, all that's known of some of these women is their name... and sometimes, scholars can only guess at which king they were wife to. Tyldesley includes all those women too, even if it's just to say all we have is a name.

Well written. Very well illustrated. Highly recommended for both the general audience and specialists.

Chronicle of the Queens of Egypt by Joyse Tyldesley is really well researched and is a perfect companion volume to Chronicle of the Pharaohs, by Peter A. Clayton. The formatting o f the two books is nearly the same in showing the chronology, dates of each queen's rule, which king she was either married to or regent for, as well as her accomplishments, cartouches and other pertinent information .

This hardbound book will make a great addition to an Egyptophile of any age. The information is easy to find as well as listing additional resources in the back for those who want to do even more in depth research.

Most of Egyptian History is dominated by men, Pharoahs like Thutmose III and Ramesses II but few women. Often depicted beside their husbands as the 'little woman' they played an important role in the royal families of the Egyptians. Often standing in the backgrounds a few gained lasting historical status such as Nefertiti, Hatshepsut, who became the Pharoah and dpicted herself as a man in a man's world, Nefertari, who wwas so loved by her husband Ramesses II that he built her a temple where she is depicted the same size as her great husband at Abu Simbel. Women in Egypt were more respected and often worked behind the scenes to ensure their husband's success,

This is a fabulous book, worthy for any student of Egyptology to read! I'm just a hobbyist, but I am writing a historical novel set in ancient Egypt, and this book gives me a better idea of what life might have been like for women during the time period in question. Joyce presents her facts with lovely illustrations which complement the text perfectly.

Gift. She loved it. But by the time I got through reading a bit here and there before wrapping it I think I would like to get it for me too. Covers many day to day details that are interesing and informative as well as "the big stuff" that any Egyptian history fan would be seeking.

I am afraid that I cannot review this book as it was a present for a good friend. I did know that she had seen the book and liked it; she is very much into ancient egypt. She said that it was informative and she just loved the illustrations. Apparently, most publications deal with the Pharaohs and not the Queens, this book joins up the dots.
