This book develops an authentic and at the same time revolutionary musical analysis of ancient Greek poetry. It departs from the abstract metrical analyses of the past in that it conceives the rhythmic and harmonic elements of poetry as integral to the whole expression, and decisive in the interpretation of its meaning. David offers a thoroughgoing treatment of Homeric poetics: here some remarkable discoveries in the harmonic movement of epic verse, when combined with some neglected facts about the origin of the hexameter in a "dance of the Muses," lead to essential new thinking about the genesis and the form of Homeric poetry. He also gives a foretaste of the fruits to be harvested in lyric by a musical analysis, which applies a new theory of the Greek tonic accent and considers concretely the role of dance in performance.

A. P. David is a classical Hellenist who did his doctorate in the Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago. 'The Dance of the Muses: Choral Theory and Ancient Greek Poetics' was published by Oxford (2006); it includes a new theory of the Greek and Latin tonal accent, as well as a revolutionary approach to Homeric poetics, which connects the hexameter to an origin in dance rhythm. A website (danceofthemuses) and a substack (homerist) with supporting audio and video recordings are available. He has also published a monograph on the role of mathematics in the philosophy of the late Plato ('Plato's New Measure: the "Indeterminate Dyad"'). His original fiction so far includes '"I Am A Forgotten Man": Yuri's Odyssey', and 'The Tale of the Pig Man, or "Waking Up"'. A first collection of his poetry, 'Past Your Ear', has been published, and two new collections ('Over The Moon' and 'Bullroarer') have followed. David is a student of plasma cosmology and the Electric Universe (see Thunderbolts). He is married and lives in Kandy, Sri Lanka.

Top review from the United States

Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2018
This is one of the most brilliant books about poetry and drama I have ever read; it is certainly the most brilliant book I've ever read about poetic meter. A. P. David's astonishingly simple and revolutionary hypothesis is that all Greek poetry and drama originated in dance; that the "feet" of poetry are actually dance steps meant to outline the moment of the body. More than this, however: his argument underscores that point that in ancient Greece, art WAS religion, and that, in chanting lyrics and performing these movements, the ancients were actually trying to INVOKE and summon forth the gods. Therefore, for the ancient Greeks, art and religion were inseparable, and the words of the drama were inseparable from the dance. Anyone doubting the fundamental rightness of this theory has only to view a simple clip of a reconstructed choral movement located online. This book makes all the apparent weirdness of ancient drama suddenly make sense. It is not an easy read, especially if you don't know Greek. But I guarantee, you will never think about ancient Greek drama or poetry the same again once you read it. It is jaw-droppingly brilliant.
